National Fire Pup Day

October 1 is National Fire Pup Day! Dogs have historically worked, lived, and slept alongside members of local fire departments since the early 19th century. Although most people only associate Dalmatians with firefighting, there are many different breeds that bravely help human firefighters!

Fire pups are not just companions for firefighters. Many dogs work fires and their aftermath, participating in search-and-rescue missions. With their super-sensitive noses “acceleration detection canines” can sniff out evidence of arson.

How can we honor fire pups today – and everyday?

1.        Adopt a fire-rescued dog. Fire stations and animal shelters take in dogs who survive fires and need loving homes to support them.

2.       Donate to you local fire department or animal shelter.

3.       Become a volunteer firefighter or volunteer for your local animal shelter. With nearly one million volunteer firefighters in the U.S., many parts of the country need volunteers to fight fires and provide life support services. Sonoma county local animal shelters cannot operate without volunteers!
